About Iracambi

The Iracambi Research and Conservation Center is located in one of the world’s most important biodiversity hotspots: the Atlantic Forest. Our programs include ecological restoration, education for sustainability, scientific research, and volunteering. We bring together people from around the world with a shared goal:  saving forests, changing lives.

Amigos de Iracambi

Saving forests, changing lives

Amigos de Iracambi is a non-profit organization registered in Brazil and the US, with more than two decades of action in the Serra do Brigadeiro region. Over this time, we have:

– planted more than 300,000 seedlings of native Atlantic Forest species
founded the region’s first environmental education program
implemented the first Geographic Information System (GIS)
helped establish thousands of hectares of protected areas
hosted more than 3,000 Iracambistas (students, researchers, and volunteers) from over 70 countries
positively impacted the lives of thousands of people in our region and around the world.

Our Iracambistas can be found in every corner of the globe: in universities, schools, businesses, the arts, governments, and international organizations. They are students, doctors, teachers, lawyers, scientists, writers, filmmakers, technicians, farmers, and professionals in countless fields – always guided by a shared purpose: to make the world a better place.

Our mission

Iracambi is dedicated to the conservation of the Atlantic Forest through restoration, research, education, and community engagement. We work to protect this ecosystem while promoting sustainable development in local communities.

Our vision

We envision a future in which the Atlantic Forest is largely protected and restored where local communities thrive sustainably, and scientific research continues to uncover the secrets of this extraordinary biome.

We are a reference

Iracambi promotes the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), a set of global targets established by the United Nations to advance sustainable development across social, environmental, and economic dimensions. In addition, Iracambi is accredited by the UN to participate in conferences on biodiversity and climate change (COP).

Iracambi is active in national and international networks, including the Organization for Tropical Studies, the Organization of Biological Field Stations, and the Association for Tropical Biology.

Iracambi is one of the 22 Regional Units that make up the Atlantic Forest Restoration Pact – a network established more than 15 years ago that brings together regional units dedicated to protecting and conserving the Atlantic Forest. The Pact is among the “World Restoration Flagship” initiatives and is recognized by the UN as one of the best large-scale ecosystem restoration projects in the world.

Iracambi is also ranked among the highest-rated institutions worldwide according to the global donation platform GlobalGiving.

Our brand

Inspired by an Indigenous story, Iracambi’s logo expresses who we are. It symbolizes our commitment to action.

“The forest is on fire, and all the animals are fleeing to a safe place – all except the hummingbird. The little bird flies toward the flames with a drop of water in her beak, knowing she cannot extinguish the fire on her own.
– ‘Foolish little bird!’ shouts the eagle, watching him. ‘Don’t you see that you’ll never be able to put out the fire by yourself?’
– ‘You are right,’ says the hummingbird. ‘I’ll never put it out alone, but I am doing my part.’

This story reminds us that every action matters. Here at Iracambi we’ve been doing our part since 1999 for the Atlantic Forest and the local communities. Together with you, we continue to do our part and move forward to build lasting change.
